Newly founded agency Rupert Ray held their launch party at Mother and invited a collection of illustrators and artists to respond to the mysterious brief “Who is Rupert Ray?” There was some stunning work on show and a real variety of interpretations to the brief.

Handsome Frank’s Malika Favre was one of the artists invited to take part and in her own distinctive style she decided that Rupert Ray was in fact a sexy sassy lady.

Aside from Malika’s (obviously our favorite) we particularly enjoyed this effort for Jamie Wieck who painted a moustache on a mirror and declared simply “you are Rupert Ray”. This inevitably led to a queue of people lining up to photograph themselves with the tache in just the right place. Our best effort below:

Meanwhile, across town Lesley Barnes had been invited to exhibit work at the Fashion Space Gallery. The exhibition entitled ‘Go Figure: New Fashion Illustration’ is the second in a series of events devoted to profiling the talents of the leading emerging artists in the field of fashion.

Naturally, Lesley’s work was right at home with an array of impressive work:

Last month our talented twins, MaricorMaricar produced this awesome chalk mural for London agency Hi-ReS! based on the famous Samuel Beckett quote. We liked it so much we decided to produce it as a screen print and last week we took deliver of 100 limited edition prints.

The edition of 100 (numbered) are printed on Ebony Black GF Smith Colorplan paper (350gsm) courtesy of our good friends at Barnhaus

Being a generous hearted bunch we’re not planning to sell the prints, we’re giving them away, but we want them to find good homes. So if you work at design or advertising agency and would like one to hang in the studio please drop us an email.

The article examines the ‘cult’ of Apple and likens obsessives of the brand to followers of a religion, complete with Apple stores as it’s temples and white headphones as rosary beads.

The latest edition is the ‘Creativity Issue’ and our friends at TCoL invited a couple of Handsome Frank’s finest to provide some illustrations for the book.

First up, Andrew Lyons was tasked with drawing Messrs Shakespeare, Dylan and Edison to accompany a thought provoking article on copyright in the 21st Century:

As Lesley explains, “Not everyone can have a ‘front row’ seat at London Fashion Week, so I created this ‘catwalk’ concertina of the AW 2012 shows! It’s great to display on your shelf or fold up and keep in your Mulberry ‘Del Ray’ bag.” We think it’s rather splendid.

The story set in Georgia (Caucasus), touches on some difficult issues: incest, illness, alienation. So the art director was looking for an illustrator who could convey the overall atmosphere and feel of the piece in a sensitive way. Michelle’s style worked as the perfect tonic to the grim subject matter.

Secret 7″ was organised by Universal Music UK and Manchester based design agency Music, in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. The Cure, Noah & The Whale, Florence + The Machine, Ben Howard, DJ Shadow, CSS, Bombay Bicycle Club each donated one of their own tracks and Secret 7” set a brief for creatives and music enthusiasts across the world to design a record sleeve for their chosen track. Being a kind hearted bunch the illustrators at Handsome Frank were more than happy to get involved and produced some awesome artwork for the event.

We can’t tell you who’s are who’s (because it’s a secret see), but we wanted to share them with you…

All 700 sleeves went on exhibition at London’s Idea Generation gallery with a private view last Tuesday.

And this Saturday, in conjunction with the UK’s 4th annual Record Store Day, the sleeves go on sale to the general public with all proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust

All in all a fantastic project and a great fundraiser for a very worthy charity. A huge pat on the back to all concerned.

The illustration was commissioned by Wired (US) to accompany an article on banned iPhone game. The game in question ‘Freefall’ challenges players to see how far people dare to drop their phone (whilst recording the decent). Scores are awarded in line with the height achieved.

As Alexandra’s illustration shows though, the potential to smash your handset to pieces is quite high. Hence the Apple store banning the app.

Alexandra also created a short stop-motion video clip for Wired’s iPad edition:

Published by Think Publishing, Professional Manager is the official magazine off the Chartered Management Institute and is circulated to all of their members. The article explores ‘The myth of Sisterhood’ in the workplace.

Created by our very own Matt Saunders the image was produced for the forthcoming Star Wars tribute show taking place in Leeds on May 4th (May the 4th be with you).

Best known for her owl and wildlife inspired pieces, paper artist Helen talks about her process and influences. You can see more of her work here.

She’s exhibiting a mixture of her collage and 3D montage work with a number of items for sale.

Joël’s beautiful paintings are created using egg tempera lovingly applied to hand prepared gesso boards.

A UK based New Zealander, her paintings are meticulous, graphic and often nostalgic and she loves painting food and British culture.

First up, GQ magazine asked David to create a map showing the location of the award winning Pig Hotel in the New Forest. The map also shows where all of the local ingredients for the food are sourced from.

Meanwhile, The Times monthly science magazine ‘Eureka’, approached David to create a images of a selection of Britain’s most important scientists. Below is the set of 12.

Another client, Dartmouth College (an Ivy League American University), approached David to create a series of images for their alumni magazine.

Finally, staying in the academic sector, BPP Law and Business School commissioned a set of spot and full page illustrations for use in their new prospectus and other student literature.

As in previous years, the organisers hand selected twenty ‘up and coming’ illustrators who’s talents they felt were worthy of recognition. We’re delighted to say that not one but TWO Handsome Frank artists were selected for the show and we went along last night as very proud agents to check out the exhibition.

Tim McDonagh

Tim McDonagh put together a stunning collection of his work and unveiled some fantastic new work. The centre point of his collection is a huge new work depicting a sprawling section of wet grass, interwoven with various objects of interest and intrigue. The details is really quite mind boggling (look out for the rock n roll references), it has to be seen first hand to be fully appreciated.

David Sparshott

Also selected by the curators was Handsome Frank’s newest signing David Sparshott.

David chose to hang a mix of old and new work and showed the huge versatility of his portfolio.

Our personal favorites were the new self initiated works inspired by his recent travel’s in South East Asia.

This chalk mural was hand drawn from scratch, the pesky projector failed, and the whole process was streamed live on the internet (just to wrack up the pressure a little bit). As you can see though, the results are pretty darn awesome.
