Frank and the Force

Stuart at Handsome Frank, Featured Project

Joining forces with Disney for some of our finest adventures in illustration, in a galaxy far, far away.

With the reveal of Charlie Davis’s latest artwork for The Mandalorian & Grogu, we thought it was the perfect time to round up our adventures with Disney.

Over the years, our artists have created illustrated posters for The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Acolyte and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, each bringing their own perspective to a galaxy of much-loved characters. These commissions mean a great deal to the fans, and to quite a few of us at Handsome Frank.

Here’s a look at the work, starting with Charlie’s latest activation for The Mandalorian & Grogu, which recently made the jump to Disney+.

The Mandalorian & Grogu by Charlie Davis

For Din Djarin and Grogu’s big-screen outing, Charlie Davis took us into the cockpit, capturing the pair mid-hyperspace jump. With Grogu sporting his armour, the illustration is packed with carefully considered details for fans to spot.

One particularly memorable perk was an invitation to the exclusive fan event at Cineworld Leicester Square earlier this year. Cast members, Jon Favreau and even the actual Grogu puppet joined loyal fans for a preview of the film. Quite a night out!

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord by Charlie Davis

Charlie ventured into the darker corners of the galaxy for Lucasfilm Animation’s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.

The brief called for promotional artwork reflecting the intensity of Maul’s story as he rebuilds his criminal syndicate in the shadows of the Empire. Criminal underworlds and master-apprentice relationships gave Charlie plenty to explore, and a very different atmosphere to capture.

The Acolyte by Charlie Davis

Our next stop takes us back to The Acolyte, another Disney+ commission for Charlie Davis. His illustrated promotional artwork brought his distinctive approach to character and composition to a different corner of the Star Wars universe.

Ahsoka by Petra Eriksson & Kim Salt

For the release of Ahsoka on Disney+, Petra Eriksson and Kim Salt were invited to create posters celebrating the series’ powerful female lead.

Both artists brought their own distinct approach to the brief, using colour, shape and composition to capture Ahsoka Tano’s world. It’s something we particularly enjoy about these commissions - seeing how the same story can inspire such different responses, with each artist’s personality coming through in the finished work.

The Mandalorian by Bruno Mangyoku, Matt Saunders & Charlie Davis

Our earlier adventures with The Mandalorian saw Matt Saunders, Charlie Davis and Bruno Mangyoku each bring their own take on the series to illustrated promotional campaigns for Disney+.

Matt’s textured, cinematic approach, Charlie’s expressive character work and Bruno’s bold, graphic compositions each offer a different view of life in the Outer Rim. Together, the posters show just how much room there is for individual interpretation within this much-loved universe.

A huge thank you to the team at Disney for inviting our artists into the Star Wars universe, and to all the artists involved for bringing so much of themselves to it. It’s been a pleasure to see these collaborations take shape!
