Amazon is a long-standing Handsome Frank client. Most of the time we work with their publishing team creating a wide range of lovely, illustrated book covers. This time around though, the team came to us with something even more exciting. They wanted our help with wallpaper artworks for the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, their first e-note device to feature a colour E-Ink display.
After a few conversations, a selection of our artists were chosen and tasked with creating bespoke illustrations that would be preloaded into every device. One key consideration for the project, was understanding how the illustrations would be rendered on the Scribe Colorsoft. The E-Ink display renders colours in a very different way to a standard screen. This meant a degree of back and forth and delicate adjustments having to be made to the artwork files before they looked their best. Working to such a specific requirements was an interesting challenge, but one that the artists were happy to tackle and their efforts really paid off.
One of the key messages that the Kindle team wanted to convey, was that the artwork should look hand-rendered and show the human touch, hence favouring artists and illustrators with traditional methods like painting and drawing. Partnering on this project with Amazon was a real joy and it was so great to be able to bring multiple artists from our roster on board. A huge well done to Matt Saunders, Joël Penkman and Sarah Maycock who’s artwork is now loaded into every Kindle Scribe Colorsoft device, worldwide.
