Luke McConkey's Nike Mercshop

Amy at Handsome Frank, Featured Project

A footy fan getting the call to work with Nike football is a golden opportunity. So when Pro:Direct Sports tapped Luke McConkey for their latest Mercshop, it was match made in heaven.

Pro:Direct Sport is the world's largest online specialty sports and sports fashion retailer famous for its massive selection of performance gear, footwear, and apparel. With specialised stores across the globe, the Liverpool store is no exception - hosting the most premium and sought-after football gear.

Throughout the summer, Pro:Direct and Nike ran a series of in-store workshops across the country. When in Liverpool, naturally the first call was to knock on the door of city local Luke McConkey - and he was quick to get on the ball.

The workshop was held to celebrate Pro:Direct's launch of the new Nike Mercurial boot pack. As a certified football (and Mercurial) fan himself, Luke headed down to the footy pitch to put the boots through their paces. Back in his studio, he turned that first touch into a series of Merc-inspired illustrations.

Each illustration combined Luke’s signature charm, the unmistakable Nike swooshes and a touch of Pro:Direct’s staple branding that added up to a kicker of a collection.

The Mercshop itself saw Luke's custom Nike illustrations transferred onto heat presses and invited the local community into the Liverpool store to create their very own McConkey merch. Luke's playful icons graced many-a tote bag throughout the day, while a larger football pitch scene was designed to sit perfectly on t-shirts.

Heading down for the one-day-only event, Luke chatted to the local community as they perfected their designs, assisting with placement and curation

To compliment the event, Luke also designed a custom pair of Superflys that adorned the store for the day, with offers to buy coming in thick and fast (they’re not for sale, but we’re open to hearing bids).

The workshop was a golden goal for football and art fans alike, bringing the local Liverpool community together over a shared love of the beautiful game and even more beautiful illustration. It sounds like Pro:Direct keen for a rematch, so this won't be the final whistle for the McConkey Mercshop...
