When publisher Two Hoots began working on The Wonder of Life on Earth, they had a bold vision for the illustration: visuals that would spark curiosity and wonder, drawing inspiration from vintage science books with vivid, graphic imagery. Enter Raxenne Manquiz, renowned for her flora and fauna illustrations and richly textured style, brimming with personality. She couldn't resist the opportunity to travel back in time and explore life as it once unfolded.

Of course, creating imagery from a time from which no visual references exist, poses a unique challenge. Using the author’s comprehensive descriptions, and working closely with Two Hoots to verify her reinterpretations, Raxenne began where life itself began, bacteria. Sketching for this chapter she developed a vivid, eye-catching and heavily stylised visual language that would carry on throughout the rest of the book.
Across thirty chapters, Raxenne translated billions of years of evolution into accessible, richly detailed imagery. From the first cells and early plants to dinosaurs, mammals and adaptable primates, her work brings clarity and warmth to author Henry Gee’s sweeping narrative. Being able to picture the complex ideas, brings readers a sense of understanding to accompany the discovery and awe.

As with all books, the cover soon became the project’s focal point. After exploring several options and incorporating various elements from throughout the book, the team chose a dramatic black background with a galaxy-like depth. Designed to feel lush, vibrant and full of life. Its subtle symmetry reflects themes of evolution and change without feeling too rigid or literal.

Seeing the artwork as a printed proof prompted some last minute final refinements, with textures adjusted to help the illustrations truly shine on the page whilst still retaining a traditional, classic aesthetic. Released 6th Feb, 2026, the finished book marks the culmination of one of Raxenne’s most challenging and rewarding commissions to date. A thoughtful visual journey through the wonder of life on Earth.

Special thanks to author Henry Gee, Helen Weir at Two Hoots, and graphic designer David Wardle, for their enthusiasm, time and patience to help bring this beautiful project to life. Photography by Emma Matthews.
